Interim Director of Music and Organist
Job Description
St. Thomas seeks an experienced Interim Director of Music and Organist to serve our vibrant worshipping community, while we search for a permanent Director of Music and Organist. The interim is invited to apply for the permanent position. The interim will ideally start as early as September 29, 2024 - May 2025.
The Interim Director of Music and Organist will plan, organize, and direct our music programs to enrich our church community. They will provide music leadership during Sunday morning services and other services that are part of the church’s liturgical life. They will occasionally play at funerals, weddings, Evensong, Taize, and other special services as described by the Rector. They will both play the organ and direct the adult choir.
Responsibilities

Lead music at all liturgies and services on Sunday mornings and other special services as required by the Rector and as described in the church calendar year.

Build upon the strong tradition of Anglican Choral music as well as incorporating global and paperless music during Sunday morning worship (8 am and 10 am).

Lead weekly Taize, monthly Evensong, occasional wedding, funeral, and situation-specific services as described by the Rector.

Conduct weekly adult choir rehearsals; maintain the music library with volunteers.

Submit text and music to the office staff for printing in weekly/special bulletins.

Work with the Music Guild to attend and execute the music concert series.

Work with the Children’s Choir Director to support her ministry (includes 45 Choristers and a dozen or so Schola Singers). Support and serve as a resource to this program as we introduce the Royal School of Music program.

Support plans for 2025 Choir-in-Residence at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London.

Prepare and monitor the music ministry budget; present an annual budget to the Finance Committee in collaboration with the Music Guild.
Qualifications and Skills

Superb organist/musician with a commitment to excellence in liturgical worship.

Knowledge of traditional sacred music and Episcopal liturgical practice.

Knowledge of global and paperless music in the Episcopal and wider church.

Proficiency in choir conducting (with singers of all ages) and pipe organ playing.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak before groups.

Ability to work collaboratively with others.

A sense of humor.

A shared sense of mission.

Benefits and Compensation
This role can be 30-40 hours per week. Pay will be determined by several factors including education or training, relevant work history and job-related skills. The salary range for this position is $60,000-95,000. Benefits include full medical coverage for all members of a household.
