Director of Music and Organist
Job Description
St. Thomas seeks an experienced Director of Music and Organist to serve our vibrant worshipping community and to facilitate worship of God through music.
The position will start in late spring to early summer (2025).
The Director of Music and Organist will plan, organize, and direct our music programs to enrich our church community. They will provide music leadership during Sunday morning services and other services that are part of the church’s liturgical life. They will also play at funerals, weddings, Evensong, Taizé, and other special services as described by the Rector. They will play the organ, direct the adult choir, and supervise the Children’s Choir Director. They will also oversee the Music Guild, working with the guild to provide leadership, vision, and administrative support for the concert series.
Responsibilities

Lead music at all liturgies and services on Sunday mornings and other special services as required by the Rector and as described in the church calendar year.

Build upon the strong tradition of Anglican Choral music as well as incorporate global and paperless music during Sunday morning worship (8 am and 10 am).

Lead weekly Taizé, monthly Evensong, occasional wedding, funeral, and situation-specific services as described by the Rector.

Conduct weekly adult choir rehearsals; maintain the music library with volunteers.

Prepare Sunday morning service leaflets as well as special prayer service leaflets. Work with the Parish Administrator to ensure the printing of weekly bulletins is done promptly. The Parish Administrator will create wedding and funeral service leaflets.

Work with the Music Guild to plan and execute the annual concert series (roughly 5-6 concerts annually).

While the director has the final say over concert content and budget, they will work with the Music Guild to plan the concert series.

They will be the administrator by overseeing the planning process to envision the concert content, create a budget, hire musicians, and work with the communications staff person to promote offerings.

Supervise the Children’s Choir Director to support her ministry (includes 45 Choristers and a dozen Schola Singers). Support and serve as a resource to this program that uses the Royal School of Music program.

Support plans for 2025 Choir-in-Residence at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. Depending on the start date and the Rector’s approval, this position may or may not attend the trip.

Prepare and monitor the music ministry budget; present an annual budget to the Finance Committee in collaboration with the Music Guild.
Qualifications and Skills

Superb organist/musician with a commitment to excellence in liturgical worship.

Knowledge of traditional sacred music and Episcopal liturgical practice.

Knowledge of global and paperless music in the Episcopal and wider church.

Proficiency in choir conducting (with singers of all ages) and pipe organ playing.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak before groups.

Ability to work collaboratively with others.

Benefits and Compensation
This is full-time with benefits. Several factors will determine pay, including education or training, relevant work history, and job-related skills. The salary range for this position is $107,000-115,000. The position is eligible for health insurance (medical and dental) coverage (the health insurance details are outlined in the Employee Handbook). On your behalf, a 9% contribution will be made to a CPG 403(b) Plan of the Church Pension Fund.
